Some warning signs that it is time to repipe your home include:

What to Look for When You Think It May Be Time to Repipe
If you notice any of these signs, call your local repiping experts at JD Service Now:
- Corroded or leaking pipes. Even an untrained eye should be able to spot pipes that are on their last legs. If you notice rust, stains, discolored patches, flakes, or indentations on your pipes, it’s time to have a professional come in and replace them. Even a small area of corrosion can lead to major problems if left unaddressed. Corroded pipes lead to leaks, which can leave you with serious water damage. If you spot a leak, you’ll want to call a plumber immediately.
- Pipes made from lead or polybutylene. If your home is old enough, you may have pipes made from unsafe materials. Lead pipes were commonly used in older homes before we understood the adverse health effects of consuming heavy metals. Polybutylene, another material that was used from the late-‘70s through the mid-’90s, has become infamous for rupturing and is no longer used. We’d like to believe these hazardous materials have been replaced, but they still exist in many homes.
- Pipes that are 50 years or older. The average life expectancy for pipes is around 50 years. If yours are older than that or getting close to the half-century mark, you should plan to have them replaced soon. It’s always better to replace your pipes before they cause issues.
- Low water pressure. Have you noticed a change in your water pressure? This is one of the tell-tale indications that your pipes are at the end of their lifespan. While it can be a sign of other plumbing issues, low water pressure is typically caused by mineral or sediment buildup in your pipes.
- Water discoloration. Yellow, brown, or red water is never something you want to see when you turn on your faucet. Discolored water is a fairly good indication that your pipes have a buildup of rust or sediment and will need to be replaced soon.
- Water that tastes or smells bad. This sign is sure to get your attention. Foul smelling or tasting water can be caused by pipes that have started to corrode. Leaks are highly probable once corrosion has begun, so you’ll want to call a plumber as soon as possible.
- Water temperature fluctuations. Have you noticed that your temperature shifts from freezing cold to scalding hot without warning or when you’ve made just a minor adjustment to the faucet? Your piping valves may need replacing. The lifespan of your valves should be the same as the rest of the piping, so a problem with one usually means there’s a problem with the other.
