Every property owner wants to keep their HVAC system well-maintained while saving money on electric bills. However, there are common HVAC maintenance myths that will harm your system and cost you more money down the line. JD Services discredited the most common HVAC myths below.
Myth #1: Turning off your AC when you leave the house is a waste of energy
Many people believe that setting the AC to a higher temperature during the day is more efficient than turning it off completely. They think it takes more energy to shut the system on and off, but in reality, this isn’t true. It always saves more energy to shut your system off when you aren’t using it.
Myth #2: Closing the vents in empty rooms reduces your energy bill
Closing your vents increases air pressure inside the ducts, which could cause the vent seams to leak and spew your cold and warm air in places where it shouldn’t go. This results in a waste of energy and money.
Myth #3: You only need to change your filter once a year
A dirty filter can clog your system and reduce airflow and quality. This shortens the lifespan of your HVAC system because it makes the unit work harder over time. Filters should be cleaned or changed every few months while the system is operating.
Myth #4: Cranking the thermostat will heat or cool your house faster
Another common myth is that pushing the thermostat temp all the way down will cool your house quicker. This is not true—it will simply continue running until the temperature you set is reached. Set your thermostat to the temperature you actually want. There’s no way to speed it up.
Myth #5: Routine maintenance costs more than it saves
Your HVAC system is complex and needs annual tune-ups. Checking it at least annually can save you from major problems down the line. Even if your HVAC system is running smoothly, you should still schedule routine maintenance from a professional twice a year.
